Outpatient Counselor (LPC or LCSW required) - San Marcos, TX

Cenikor is a non-profit organization and one of the largest substance abuse treatment centers in the nation. We are currently seeking an Outpatient Counselor for our outpatient facility in San Marcos, Texas. Licensure REQUIRED: LPC

Schedules: Weekday evenings and weekends required.


The Outpatient Counselor provides substance abuse treatment services to ensure that each client develops the skills necessary to live a life free from substance dependence.


  1. Provide substance abuse counseling and support to individuals, families and groups in the community.
  2. Provide group counseling and educational groups as requested.
  3. Work closely with Outpatient Manager to screen and intake all group participants.
  4. Conduct clinical justification and comprehensive assessment utilizing clinical skills and knowledge to diagnose substance abuse/dependence in order to provide diagnosis within scope of license.
  5. Develop and implement an individualized treatment plan based on comprehensive assessment. Update and document treatment plan in Welligent and CMBHS.
  6. Maintain compliance with CARF, DSHS statements of work requirements, all federal and state regulatory standards as well as policies and procedures.
  7. Prepare monthly reports for attainment of program goals and achievement levels. Prepare monthly client reports for HCCADA, DSHS, Federal Probation and TAIP.
  8. Answer inquiries concerning available programs and services.
  9. Accept referrals from individuals, families and agencies in the community.
  10. Ensure documentation is entered into the electronic health record and deadlines for completion are met consistently.
  11. Participate as a team member to provide an optimum environment for client recovery.
  12. Bill for client services in accordance with appropriate funding source.  Collect co-pays and deductibles as required. Ensure compliance with billing processes and work directly with the Director of Payor Relations in order to maximize revenue.
  13. Maintain open communication with Outpatient Manager, Director of Access Center and Admissions and the Director of Payor Relations.
  14. Communicate with Outpatient Manager any issues relating to client complaints and/or other concerns.
  15. Develop/maintain relationships in order to maximize the outpatient mental health program, including to referral sources, other agencies and insurance providers.
  16. Participate in the Quality Assurance program according to policy and training.
  17. Complete any reports accurately and submit per schedule.
  18. Uphold the core principles of Cenikor’s culture and create a positive working environment for all team members. 
  19. Maintain strict confidentiality on all client and foundation matters and refer questionable issues to your supervisor.
  20. Perform additional duties as assigned and consistent with the exempt functions as assigned in this job description. 


Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Experienced and/or knowledgeable in providing education and therapeutic counseling (individual and group formats) for adults and adolescents.
  • Experienced and capable of identifying appropriate resources for client development and providing substance abuse counseling.
  • Knowledgeable of best practices of outpatient counseling.
  • Possesses good oral and written communication skills.
  • Experienced in working with diverse population.
  • Patience, perseverance, and resilience in a challenging environment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software required, including MS Outlook calendar.

  • Master Degree required


  • Two (2) years of substance abuse treatment experience preferred.
  • Experience with CMBHS or other electronic health record system preferred.

Licensure Required:

  • LPC or LCSW required
